Within the limitations of this study, the distribution and range of the 3 color parameters of the value, chroma, and hue of a systematically ordered shade guide were found to be more regularly ordered and enlarged, compared to traditional shade guides. If each of the adjacent shade Conclusions The value ratio compared with the lowest value tab was 1.0 to 1.4, and the chroma ratio compared with the lowest chroma tab was 1.7 to 11.8. The distributions of the 3 color parameters of the shade tabs were not equally spaced from the adjacent shade tab. The null hypothesis, that the distributions of the 3 color parameters would be equally spaced from the adjacent shade tab in the Vitapan 3D-Master, was rejected. The influence of the second designation letter can not be clearly observed in this graph.ĭistributions of the CIE a* and Discussion The chroma increased as the third designation number increased within each value and hue group, such as 5M however, the ratios of the increase varied by the group. The first number in the 3-digit designation, such as “5” in “5M1,” demonstrated the difference in the value. Based Resultsĭistributions of the value (CIE L*) and chroma (C* ab) of the shade guide tabs are presented in Figure 1.

Prior to color measurement of the shade tabs, the 5 × 8-mm-wide middle portions of the labial surface of each shade tab were polished with up to 2400-grit silicon carbide paper (Buehler Ltd, Lake Bluff, Ill) to make the measuring surface flat. The color of shade tabs from the Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide was measured according to the CIELAB color scale on a reflection spectrophotometer to determine the distribution of shade tabs by the value, chroma, hue angle, and CIE a* and b* values.
